Here is a master bedroom on a budget. One of the things I really enjoy doing is changing up a space. But when the budget says no and the heart says yes, what do you do? Well, for me, it usually involves some paint, particularly chalk paint. My bedroom had been very masculine for a couple of years and I really wanted to lighten it and add some feminine touches, much to my husband’s dislike. But what do they know?! So, the first thing I did was go on Kijiji to see if I could find some old pieces that I could revamp for this space. I was lucky enough to find a 1920’s dining room set that consisted of a table, 6 chairs and 3 buffets all for $400.00. Can you say score!! I already had an old Amish piece that was black and I had some cloud white, linen and vintage white latex paint left over from past projects.
This is where is gets fun. I make my own chalk paint using any latex paint I have on hand. Here is the Recipe I like to use.
1/3 cup latex paint
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup plaster of paris
Mix water and plaster of paris together until smooth and add to paint. This amount will do one dresser with 6 drawers.
I painted both the larger and smaller buffet in vintage white and gave them some distressing with a clear wax. I painted the Amish wardrobe in cloud white but waxed it when it was wet to give it that streaky look. I added the Chandelier which was a found item. It was spray painted and distressed and I added $5.00 crystals to it and a $30.00 medallion to the ceiling. I found some white bedding on sale and picked it up for $99.00 at Homesense. The wall pieces and mirror were items already in the room. Both the mirror and the scroll wooden piece were chalk painted in cloud white.
The wall colour (cabot trail from Benjamin Moore) stayed the same.
Total cost to finish this space was $335.00.
Hope you found this useful. I would be happy to answer any questions.
